The importance of bone health: The importance of bone health

Bone health is important at any stage of the lifespan. Your bones help you move around and protect organs. Your bones grow throughout childhood and adolescence and bone renewal and remodeling occurs throughout life. Bone is living tissue, with cells breaking down the bone while other cells rebuild new bone. Bones are able to change and adapt to changing load requirements (IE: exercise), which is important as we get older.

What is osteoporosis? 

Osteoporosis is a skeletal condition characterised by impaired bone strength and an increased risk of fracture. Osteoporosis is quite common; with 1.2 million Australians estimated to have osteoporosis, with a further 6.3 million with low bone density. It is more common in older women; affecting 1 in 4 women over the age of 75.
